50 Million Trees Program Funding
Funding for the Forests Ontario’s 50 Million Tree Program has been announced by the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna and the office of the Minister of Natural Resources, Amarjeet Sohi. This funding will be available through to 2023.
Upon cancellation announcements by the provincial government over 92,000 people signed a petition showing their support for the program and the benefits provided by trees such carbon sequestration, flood and drought protection, wildlife habitat, just to name a few services they provide.
This federal funding announcement acknowledges that tree planting is an important management tool to protect the environment and to reduce the impacts of climate change.

Markham Naturalization Project
The federal government has announced funding in Markham to restore more than two hectares of land into a more natural flood plain as part of the federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
This green infrastructure project will help mitigate flood damage and contain nearly 37,000 cubic metres of flood water. Lined with trees, the finished project will provide more than just protection against flood waters, but also provide much needed green space to support biodiversity and a more aesthetically pleasing community.
